Christmas Lights – Alta Loma / Rancho Cucamonga – Thoroughbred

Alta Loma / Rancho Cucamonga’s holiday lights on Thoroughbred Street have provided a light show that has thrilled many Inland Empire holiday fans for years.

It is certainly the most talked about Christmas light display in the Inland Empire and often considered the best. Indeed, this Christmas light show has been mentioned by SCPR, BeggarBlade and So Cal Pocket Memories. The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin reports that the tradition dates back over 20 years as neighbors began to “keep up with the Joneses.”

Christmas Lights on Thoroughbred in Alta Loma

Most people head to Thoroughbred Street lights (often incorrectly known as Thoroughbred Lane) by going North of the 210 Freeway, off Sapphire Street in Alta Loma. One of the nicest homes is located at 8287 Thoroughbred St, Alta Loma, CA 91701. If you go this way, expect lots of traffic and a decent walk from your car.

Want to avoid the traffic and get a close parking spot? Avoid Sapphire Street! Everyone goes north on Sapphire from the 210 and (tries to) turn left on Thoroughbred, which will eventually be closed. Instead, take Carmelian St. north- way north. Turn left on Hillside. Then, turn left on Sapphire. Park on Jennet St. and walk a block south to Thoroughbred. You’ll end up at the same place that everyone else is going, but about a half hour sooner, and without a headache.

Bring cash as neighbors sell hot chocolate, cookies, churros, tacos and more!  These are traditional light displays that are not set to music.

While some people just head up Thoroughbred and back the other way, we found beautiful houses on Jennet- just one block north of Thoroughbred, including a house that was featured by Fritz Coleman on NBC. We recommend checking out the neighborhood after you’ve seen Thoroughbred street once.

When do the lights on Thoroughbred Street in Alta Loma / Rancho Cucamonga begin? The light show starts after Thanksgiving for some houses, and is usually at all houses by the first week of December. We’ve found some cool photos here and great video previews below!

  2. […] By Friday (the week before Christmas) we had left my grandparents and went back to Kaitlin’s. Unfortunately I got sick. Miserably sick. I tried to sleep it off, but no avail. I managed to get myself out of Kaitlin and Jared’s guest room, and we went for a little hike near the base of Mount Baldy. It was a bit chilly (hence the hats in the photo above)! We finished our hike by the time we lost all that remained of sunlight, and headed over to the land of Christmas lights. […]
