One of the best things about having The Barn at UCR in the Inland Empire is the number of events they have. Located on the beautiful campus of UCR, they host anything from top notch musical guests ranging from Mos Def to Against Me!, to political talks with folks like Cornell West and Reza Aslan. The truly amazing thing about these events is that they are not typically exclusive to UCR students, most are open to the general public. In fact, one of the best recurring events at UCR goes on at their on campus, bar and grill, The Barn. For quite some time now they’ve had musical acts come through their doors on almost every Wednesday of the school year. This year is going to be no different and The Barn updates their musical acts early every quarter to allow the excitement to really seep in and gives the campus a little extra buzz. Also, this is definitely worth saying, but shows for non-students range from 8-15 bucks at most!
The issue that seems to come up a lot is the fact that most folks around the I.E. don’t know what shows are going to be playing at the Barn, or, for that matter, what time they’ll be around. Hopefully this can shed some light onto the amazing gem that is The Barn and get some folks around talking about some of their upcoming shows. And don’t worry about parking, it’s a breeze! Essentially, they have you park in the lot a very short distance from the Barn, lot 6, and they make sure you’ll get there with tons of signs around campus to guide you. Also, it’s a small fee of 5 bucks the night of the event. But if you don’t mind the walk, there is always the option to park north of campus or in University Village just down the road.
This quarter is going to be a good one because the acts are so diverse. If you’re into hip hop, particularly underground hip hop, you’re going to be really pleased with the coming line up. People Under the Stairs are going to be showcasing their talents there in November the week after a stacked, ska lineup. With that said, be prepared to see some Indie rock superstars like Abe Vigoda and Crystal Antlers in October. If you know anything about The Barn’s shows, it’s that they aim to please all musical tastes, intimately displaying bands in their smaller setting. Overall, The Barn is going to be the place to check out some really amazing musicians up close and personal.
What might be the best, almost unnoticed aspect of the Barn is that their food is AMAZING. They run a happy hour special during their performances and you can get a beer or a basket of fries for less than you’d spend at any other venue around Southern California. Also, they have a pretty good selection of vegetarian options for those of the meat free persuasion. In fact, here’s a link to their menu so you can Know Before You Go! They serve food during the whole set of all their shows which gives a perfect amount of time to catch a break, re-energize, and enjoy some tasty, delicious food. It’s as if this place has the best of both worlds!
Basically, the rundown of The Barn is that if you want to see some great music, get some great food, and meet some great people, then this is the spot for you. It’s been a Riverside staple for quite some years now and it’s about time folks all around the I.E. hear about how eclectic this place has become. So, by all means, come on down and come and enjoy your new favorite spot in the I.E.
