Sunday, April 22nd, welcomed the Route 66 Food Truck Fest 2012– The absolutely delicious brainchild of KVCR’s own Cliff Young.
The plan: Gather together some of the best food trucks in Southern California into San Bernardino’s San Manuel Stadium for a day of feasting and fun.
My goal? To discover the best each truck had to offer and provide sweet sweet evidence though the crazy-good photography skills of Shellfoto’s Astrid Shell.
I was not disappointed.
The day? Hot and sunny with a light breeze. Shade a must.
Let the eating… Begin!
A good friend introduced me to Salvadorian pupusas just a couple of years ago. Very addictive. So when I saw Vchos with their tagline “Got Papusas?”– Excitement! Moments later: Munching though one pork, bean, and cheese pupusa paired with curtido and sipping on ice-cold coconut milk, from an ice-cold coconut (Sweet!)… I was set.
Next stop: Lisa of Two For The Road introduced me to Cap N’ Crunch Crab Cakes (I dare you to say THAT ten times fast!). These crusted caramelized creations were a mouthful in more ways then one. Loved them. They also let me know they make a mean Frosted Flakes Chicken Fingers. Nice.
Afterwards it was Ronie’s Mac ‘n Cheese Cupcake from After School Special. No frosting, all mac… with sharp cheddar and Parmesan breadcrumbs. Mmm.
Mangia Mangia Mobile kept me in pace with their lobster ravioli – cream and sauce and do I spy shrimp as well? Oh yeah.
Devilicious wowed me with their signature Butter Poached Lobster Grilled Cheese sandwich! So Rich and Tasty!
Then… MEAT! There are good burgers. There are crazy-good burgers. Then there is the Chorizo Burger from Chubby’s. Based on a 70 year-old chorizo recipe and high-quality Angus beef (sterling silver baby!), I just… couldn’t… stop… eating. One of my best burger experiences… Ever.
Main course cravings satiated… It was time for dessert.
The dessert ingredient of the day?
Bacon. And more Bacon!
From Cool Haus’s Candied Bacon ice cream creation to Suite 106 Cupcakery’s Pancakes and Bacon cupcake, sweet and salt were in force! My favorite: Chunk-n-Chip’s “Elvis” ice cream sandwich – Banana Fosters Ice Cream wedged between two Peanut Butter cookies and smothered in sweet crisp bacon. Thank you Very Much! Thank you Very Much!
But Nothing could prepare me for the non-bacon-ness of Waffles de Liege’s Original Liege Waffle with Speculoos. What in the world is speculoos? In this case it is a sweet caramel-like shortbread spread which captures your taste buds. Incredible! Sweet Waffle + Speculoos spread + Fresh Bananas + Chocolate Sauce = Pure Heaven.
Mmm. A little Italian ice love from Mustache Mike’s and it was time to just kick back in the shade… and watch the “Everyday I’m Shuffling” Contests.
It was a good day. A very good day.
Yum.
