Port of LA Lobsterfest 2012

The smell of steamed lobsters filled the air as crowds of hungry lobster fans descended on the “Port of LA” Lobsterfest, September 15, 2012 at Ports O’ Call Village.

Greet the large pelican at the entrance, walk through an inflatable lobster tunnel, and take in the sights. At the entrance you’ll see a large variety of vendor booths with fun items like handmade purses and beach style home décor. If you stay to your left you’ll walk right past a ton of food choices. Egg rolls, sausage, spicy poke roll, chicken wings, tri-tip, fried twinkies, kettle corn, and on and on and on. Even the “Rajin Cajun” from “The Next Great Food Truck Race” made an appearance!

If you follow the row of food vendors it takes you directly to the lobster! Trays and trays of lobster just begging you to take a bite. For $19.00 you get a good sized Maine lobster, cole slaw, spiced potatoes, and a roll. You also get a ton of lemons and butter-seriously you could drown the lobster in the butter they give you and still have more than enough left over!   For larger appetites add an extra lobster to your plate for a total of $33.00. If lobster isn’t really for you, just pay $10 (kids 12 and under are free) and have access to all the food booths!

After you’ve eaten play a few carnival style games, or check out the rides. Most rides are for kids, with a good amount for younger ones. Due to the heat you might want to bring a small towel or something they can sit on while they ride. After that, go and visit the pirates!  A lively group of people, singing songs, joking, and showing off Pi-Rat (a cute rat wearing a pirate hat and earing). We bought a box of “treasure”, and set up camp on the grass to listen to some music. Check the website for a listing of the musical entertainment.

When you leave, tired and full, don’t forget you have a full day of exploring waiting for you on the re-vamped Ports O’Call village. There’s a ton of fun shopping opportunities and excellent restaurants. For those who enjoy a more mellow atmposhere, grab a beer and watch the boats sail by.

The Port of LA Lobsterfest ends today, September 16, 2012. Buy your tickets at the gate, there’s still plenty of time! If you can’t make it today, bookmark the website and be sure to mark your calendar for next year!
