Bonello’s New York Pizza in Grand Terrace serves some of the best Italian food and pizza in the Inland Empire. This establishment serves authentic dishes using only the best ingredients. The best part is—it’s absolutely delicious and affordable.
Gus Garcia has owned Bonello’s for nearly seven years after purchasing it from the original owner, Tony Bonello. His story began when he was working for years at a job he hated. After learning of Tony Bonello’s interest in selling the restaurant, Gus was immediately intrigued and decided to jump at the opportunity to take over. Though Gus was already a fan of some of Tony Bonello’s recipes, he chose to add some of his own favorite dishes to the menu.
“I’ve always had a knack and affinity for cooking, so I added a lot of stuff to the menu like the chopped salad, insalata caprese, and the sausage penne arrabbiata.”
Bonello’s has over 50 items on the menu, not including the endless possibilities when it comes to their pizzas and pizza subs. For those who do not know, pizza subs are personal pizzas served on a long crust, rather than a round crust. This dish is perfect if you just want a small pizza for one or if you just don’t feel like sharing with your friends. You can get this option and create your own pie starting at just $4.95. There are around 26 toppings to choose from including premium choices such as sliced meatball, smoked provolone, and cashews. Everything from the Sicilian marinara sauce to the Italian dressing is homemade.
This establishment also has an assorted variety of tasty pastas. The sausage penne arrabbiata is tossed in a spicy marinara sauce and served with spicy sliced Italian sausage (emphasis on the word “spicy”). The zesty flavor totally separates itself from the competition and adds a new twist to the classic penne dishes you are used to. The tortellini in white sauce is another popular pasta. The creamy shells just melt in your mouth and the homemade Alfredo sauce could not be any closer to the flavors of Italy.
The biggest problem you’ll face when looking at the appetizers is deciding which one (or two) to order. A very popular
appetizer is the garlic bread knots, which are just as delicious as they are cute. The menu even states that they are addicting, and yes, they truly are (we had about three orders). These delectable garlic treats come out piping hot, ready to be dipped in the homemade Sicilian marinara sauce. You can even have them covered in a mushroom cream sauce for just $7.95 or with meatballs and marinara sauce for $5.95. Other appetizers include classics like cheese bread, mozzarella sticks and chicken wings.
Feel like eating something wholesome? No problem! Bonello’s also has a wide selection of salads. The chopped salad is tossed with romaine and iceberg lettuce, red onion, provolone, Roma tomato, salami, basil, and pepperoni. Their special House Italian Dressing is also thrown into the mix, giving it a tangy yet sweet flavor. Another appetizing veggie dish is the insalata caprese. It is a plate of sliced mozzarella served over fresh Roma tomatoes. It is then topped off with basil, olive oil, and their tangy house Italian dressing. These dishes are great by themselves or paired with a fresh plate of pasta.
If you are not sure what to order, you can always ask about the favorite dishes. According to Gus, the Margherita pizza and Lasagna are two of the most popular things on the menu. Though they are the most common orders placed by customers, Gus said they also sell a lot of pizza. If you still are not sure what to get, you may find comfort in the fact that everything on the menu is scrumptious and prepared with care.
“There’s nothing on the menu that I keep that I don’t like. If people don’t actively respond to it, it’s gone!”
When asked what his best dish is, Gus gave the most honest response. He said that there is not one thing on the menu he does not love.
Bonello’s is very interactive with their customers. In fact, Gus said the best part about owning a restaurant in the Inland Empire is the loyal customers. Bonello’s offers a rewards program, to show their customers they are appreciated. It works like this: you earn 1 point for every dollar you spend. You then earn $1 credit towards the store for every 25 points you earn. The points do not expire and stay on your account until you decide to redeem them. There is also no card to carry because your phone number is your account number. All you have to do is give them your phone number before you order, which most pizza places ask for anyway.
Still need a reason to go to Bonello’s? Why not go to support a local business! No offense to the big guys, but putting your money into a local business is a great way to support your community. Let’s face it, in these tough economic times small businesses are struggling the most. It is always a shame when your favorite restaurant has to close because not enough people go to them, despite how incredible the food is. Restaurants especially have the toughest time due to all the competition with larger chains. Bonello’s serves good quality food. It is locally owned, absolutely delicious, and best of all…it’s in the Inland Empire! When Gus Garcia was asked about his favorite thing to do in the Inland Empire, he answered by saying that he honestly loves to eat at all the restaurants we have here. “It’s a powerful feeling to find a gem,” he said. And yes, Bonello’s is a gem.
