UPDATE: Weekend Beer Tasting at Blue Mountain Beer Co.
During the Winter Festival, Brewer John Rockwell brewed a batch of wheat beer using kumquats that were freshly harvested from the kumquat tree in the Beer Garden. Well, 15.5 gallons of that beer will be ready to taste this Saturday, February 4, 2012 at the Tasting Room of Blue Mountain Beer Company, LLC. The tasting will be free.
The following is the lineup for Saturday:
- 12:00pm-1:00pm – Preliminary Registration for the upcoming Home Brew Competition hosted by Blue Mountain Beer Company.
Local home brewers interested in participating in the Blue Mountain Beer Company Brew Competition can register. During this registration session, Paulaner Hefe-Weizen will be available on draft in the Tasting Room for just $4 per 18oz glass
- 1:00-2:00pm – Blue Mountain Beer Company Volksmarch [ Friends Walk]
At this time, folks will all walk together to the local eatery (La Pasta Italia) for a tasty deli sandwich. This will coat our stomachs for the free beer tasting. During this walk, we will also celebrate the 15.5 gallon keg of Kumquat Wheat brewed by John Rockwell. We will bring the keg with us on the walk so that the yeast can be thoroughly mixed throughout the keg prior to tasting. Wear shoes suitable for walking or cross-training.
- 2:15pm-until the keg is finished – Enjoyment of the Kumquat Wheat
The objective of this session is to finish the keg of Kumquat Wheat that was brewed before our very eyes in the Beer Garden on January 21st.

Blue Mountain Beer Co. is the newest and hippest pub, beer garden and hangout in Grand Terrace, and for good reason! Owned by Grand Terrace City Councilman Gene Hays, this venue takes patrons to a German-style beer garden with numerous German beers on tap in the shadow of Blue Mountain located between downtown Riverside and San Bernardino.
Hays, an immigration attorney, found his inspiration for the pub during a three month stint in Germany where he played football. His love of Germany and desire to fill a commercial property that had been vacant for 17 years inspired him to start the Blue Mountain Beer Co.
When asked whether his position on City Council made the process any easier, he insisted that he was nothing more than average businessperson when he went through the process of opening the beer garden. “I waited in line for permits at City Hall just like everybody else,” insisted Mays. Does the city councilman have a rosy view of government since he is also an insider? Not quite. “There are regulations on the federal, state, county and local level” for an establishment like his, he told us. These regulations make starting a business too hard, he commented.
Once jumping through those regulatory hoops, he stocked this place with a wide variety of German beers, including Weissbier (Wheat beer) and Spaten (Pilsner), as well as Shipwreck, a Double IPA from Mission, a micro brew from San Diego.
The German theme doesn’t stop there. The back of the Blue Mountain Beer Co. is an outdoor beer garden with an authentic German feel, complete with wooden benches and umbrellas.
