Taking place this weekend, the Dickens Festival returns to Downtown Riverside. Celebrating the 20th anniversary, this event is filled with all sorts of festivities for the Victorian Literature geek in all of us! It will also feature character portrayals of many prominent Victorian figures, Mark Twain, poet Edgar Allan Poe, Queen Victoria herself, and of course the man himself, Charles Dickens! There will also be a marketplace full of vendors selling Victorian style jewelry, tools, clothing, crafts, and many other creative souvenirs. Many people dress in elaborate Victorian style attire. Some costumes spotted throughout the years include
characters from Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, and much much more! The featured book of the year is Hard Times by Dickens.
The event will feature festivities such as different games, arts and crafts, literature lectures, readings of various stories written by prominent Victorian writers and poets, various fashion shows, dance numbers, live music, food, drinks, and much more! Keep in mind that you do not have to dress in costume, although it is always nice to make the event more festive. The festival is taking place on Saturday, February 2nd and Sunday, February 3rd on Mission Inn Avenue between Orange Street and Lime Street. The festival itself is free, however, there may be an admission charge for the special events included in the festival. Check out the website for more details! This is a fun event that is definitely worth checking out!
